Compton Township

Compton Township, organized July 31, 1875, commemorates James Compton, an early pioneer of this county. He was born near Meadville, PA, January 14, 1840; served during the civil war in Pennsylvania and Illinois regiments, attaining the rank of captain; came to Minnesota in 1872, settling in Fergus Falls; assisted in organizing the First National Bank there, and was its cashier until 1891; was a state senator, 1883-9; was commandant of the Minnesota Soldiers’ Home at Minnehaha, after 1900; and died in Minneapolis, January 14, 1908.
