Fitzgibbons Elected to Lead Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office
December 12, 2018 – Otter Tail County, MN– After a close election and an extended wait through a recount, Barry Fitzgibbons is the new Sheriff of Otter Tail County. By a margin of eight votes Fitzgibbons edged out Kile Bergren in a recount. Sheriff Brian Schluter will retire after 23 years of service in Otter Tail County.
Fitzgibbons has served in the Otter Tail County Sheriff’s Office since 2000. He has worked within the patrol and investigative divisions while serving as a deputy and later Chief Deputy. He has also been involved with SWAT and the Public Safety Dive Team for most of his career in law enforcement. During his eighteen-year career he has also performed the role of instructor for several important training areas including use of force, taser use, school safety and response to active shooter education. Fitzgibbons has had the opportunity to attend many trainings over his career. He completed the MN Bureau of Criminal Apprehension Management Series training and this past January he participated in the elite law enforcement ten-week training at the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Virginia.
The race for sheriff was hard fought in Otter Tail County. The Sheriff’s Office race began with a primary of three candidates. The November election was so close a recount was requested and official results were not certified until mid-December.
“With such a tight race, it speaks volumes for the quality of law enforcement in Otter Tail County. There were very qualified candidates that the people had to choose from,” said Fitzgibbons, “I am very humbled and honored to be elected as your new Sheriff of Otter Tail County.”
Retiring Sheriff Schlueter leaves the Sheriff’s Office staffed with highly trained law enforcement professionals who are well equipped to carry out the mission of the office.
When asked what goals he has for the Sheriff’s Office as it transitions into new leadership, Fitzgibbons said, “I am so proud of the professionalism and dedication of the men and women of this organization. I will strive to find ways to improve service to the people of Otter Tail county. I also feel very strongly about finding alternative options for the lack of services for those in crisis with mental health and chemical dependency.”
Fitzgibbons will take office January 7th, 2019 and will serve for four years under this term.
