Customers First: Otter Tail County Launches Website Redesign

Posted On: November 7, 2018

The mission of Otter Tail County is to “enrich lives, innovate services, and enhance resources.” With this goal in mind Otter Tail County has launched a new website. The new website was based on considerable consumer input, including testing and focus groups with Otter Tail County citizens and businesses.

The web designers listened. Based on the feedback from public outreach, the new site is responsive and designed to be easily navigated on mobile devices. More than 50 percent of web traffic is reaching the website from smartphones and other mobile devices. The new site has a new look that is consistent in design and uses an optimized search engine to assist users in finding information quickly. An engaging homepage asks “what can we help you find today?” The new site emphasizes compliance with accessibility and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) practices and will allow more flexibility in adapting to changing technologies.

Scott Backstrom, E-Government Administrator, remarked, “The new version of the website is designed to be mobile first and more intuitive for residents, businesses and visitors alike. The technology we used will also make it less expensive to maintain and modify.”

Early in the design process, focus groups were held to gain feedback from those who use the website in their businesses and daily lives. The insight from focus group participants and other users clearly informed the design team that an intuitive search engine was needed. The new structure and search feature will provide easy access to information and the most commonly used resources.

While the new site is “live,” it is never finished,” John Dinsmore, County Administrator stated, “our website is meant to be a constantly evolving technology and a reflection of our commitment to public outreach and communication.”

Some of the key features:

  • Popular search button and GIS maps on the homepage
  • Links to pay, report, apply or register prominently displayed
  • Landing pages are concise with links to additional resources and services
